# Squad Server Hosting - Getting Started Guide

## Licensed vs. Unlicensed Servers

Squad community servers come in two flavors:

Unlicensed servers are completely fine for communities, events, and testing — many groups run one while building the playerbase and admin history that a license application asks for. If you obtain a license, you'll add it via `License.cfg` (see [Server Configuration](/games/squad/server-configuration)).

## Steam Workshop Mods

Squad supports mods through the **Steam Workshop** — custom maps, new factions, and full gameplay overhauls. Your server loads the mods, adds their layers to the rotation, and **clients auto-download the mods when they join**. See [Installing Mods](/games/squad/install-mods) for details.
